Potassium chlorate solid decomposes to form solid potassium chloride and oxygen gas.

Writing The Unbalanced Chemical Equation For The Decomposition of Potassium Chlorate

Writing the unbalanced chemical equation is accomplished by replacing the chemical names with the corresponding chemical formula in the word equation. This preveously determined word equation is "potassium chlorate➝potassium chloride+oxygen” the formula for sulfur is potassium chlorate. Since potassium chlorate was stated to be a solid, (s) is placed after the formula for potassium chlorate: KClO(s). potassium chloride was stated to be a solid: KCl(s). And oxygen gas is O₂(g). The unbalanced equation is KClO(s)  KCl(s)  + O₂(g).
